On April 17, the author visited Fenghai Bamboo & Wood Industry Co., Ltd., situated in the Pengkou Industrial Park of Liancheng County. Upon arrival, the bustling production workshops from both Phase I and Phase II were alive with the sound of machinery, as workers diligently crafted a variety of products, including pet houses, contemporary gardening items, and an array of bamboo goods. Additionally, the second factory of the Phase III project is nearing completion, with equipment installation underway and the production of bamboo products intended for export to Europe progressing simultaneously. The company exemplifies a vibrant and thriving development.

Fenghai is an export-focused enterprise that seamlessly combines production and trade. It specializes in the advanced processing and distribution of bamboo and wood products, offering five primary categories of indoor and outdoor furniture: pet houses, modern gardening solutions, children's items, leisure products, and bamboo goods. The structure and quality of its products have garnered significant acclaim from international customers. Fenghai's offerings are exported to 16 countries, including those in Europe, North America, Japan, and South Korea, where it has established enduring partnerships with overseas agents..

"We export 30% of our products to the United States. However, the recent tariff war initiated unilaterally by the U.S. government has impacted our operations, leading us to suspend shipments to the U.S. market. In response, we are actively focusing on expanding our presence in both European and domestic markets, which will effectively compensate for the loss of our U.S. market share. We are confident that the overall development of our company will remain largely unaffected," stated Huang Lianghai, Chairman and General Manager of Liancheng Fenghai Bamboo & Wood Industry Co., Ltd., in an interview with the author ahead of the upcoming Canton Fair.

Huang Lianghai's confidence in navigating the challenges posed by the international tariff trade war is firmly rooted in the company's unwavering commitment to producing high-quality products. This dedication is complemented by its proactive approach to developing new forms of productivity, fostering innovation, and utilizing quality as a means of reinforcing its competitive edge.

Indeed, this is not the first occasion that Huang Lianghai and 'Fenghai' have encountered international 'challenges.' As early as 2018, when the United States initiated its tariff trade war against China, 'Fenghai' had already showcased remarkable resilience in its development.

"In 2018, in a bid to stabilize the U.S. market while also venturing into Europe, the company adopted a dual strategy focused on enhancing quality and driving innovation in research and development. This proactive approach allowed the company to uncover development opportunities amid challenges, leading to sustained growth and fortification," recalled Huang Lianghai. During that period, the company made significant strides in competitiveness by elevating product quality. It aligned its standards with U.S. regulations, transitioning from conventional anti-corrosion coatings to eco-friendly alternatives, thereby extending the lifespan of its products from one year to three. The market responded positively, fully recognizing the value of these high-quality offerings. Simultaneously, the company assembled an exceptional product development team that conducted in-depth research and evaluations tailored to the European market. By analyzing consumer feedback and market trends, they successfully developed over 3,000 market-ready products, enabling the enterprise to adeptly navigate the 'crisis.'

"Our market reach has grown from the United States to Europe and Australia, ensuring a stable trajectory for our development," stated Huang Lianghai. At its height, Fenghai's products were shipped to over 20 countries around the globe. However, due to the impact of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, the primary export destinations now stand at 16.

In the face of the external pressures brought on by a new wave of tariff conflicts, Fenghai remains composed and proactive, adeptly addressing emerging challenges and striving to transform crises into opportunities. While persistently exploring the European market, the company actively engages in significant trade events, such as the Canton Fair, the China International Hardware Show, and the Xiamen Fair. These efforts further broaden both its domestic and international market presence, ultimately enhancing its market share. Fenghai is committed to increasing production capacity through technological advancements while simultaneously improving product quality via innovative techniques. The company collaborates with universities and research institutions to harness scientific achievements, organizing its R&D teams to tackle technical challenges head-on. This approach has led to the innovative development of new bamboo and wood products, including bamboo-wood composites, bamboo alternatives, and pure bamboo series, all of which significantly bolster the core competitiveness of its offerings. Moreover, Fenghai is expediting the construction of its Phase III expansion, which involves a substantial investment of 220 million yuan in a state-of-the-art digital bamboo processing production line. This initiative is part of a strategic plan to double its production capacity, reinforcing the company's commitment to growth and innovation.

"Upon the completion of this project, the company's capabilities in the production and development of bamboo products will see a significant enhancement, with production capacity expected to more than double. This advancement will positively contribute to our efforts in further expanding our presence in international markets," stated Huang Lianghai. He added that the newly developed European market could recently offset the export 'gap' created by international environmental disruptions. With the official launch of the new project at the end of August, it will enable the company to stabilize and sustainably progress within the 'blue ocean' of the bamboo products market, both in Europe and domestically."

The name 'Fenghai' suggests that through hard work, one can undoubtedly reap a bountiful harvest. Similarly, Liancheng's 'Little Bamboo' is poised for a bright future, ready to traverse oceans and flourish into something even greater, stronger, and more remarkable!
